Here's why I like to sketch:
When I sketch a sun spot or group of sun spots, I am very much more concentrated on observing the sun spot. I have to notice all the fine details. How big? How close together? Shape? Location? I "see" so much more when I sketch sun spots.
You can see in the sketches below that, as is mentioned on the Solar Cycle page, back in 2012 and 2013, the Sun was much more active than it was in 2018.
